In 2011, there was an incident between Manchester United’s star player Patrice Evra and Liverpool’s star goalscorer Luis Suarez, when racial slurs were hurled. Patrice Evra explained the incident.
In a match between Manchester United and Liverpool, former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was supposed to verbally attack former Red Devils defender Patrice Evra. There were racist insults.
Luis Suarez was sentenced to eight games and fined £40,000 after the Football Association found him guilty in the incident.
Patrice Evra revealed that he almost attacked the Liverpool striker a few days after the match. Evra was walking down the street with his brothers and they spotted Suarez across the street.
”I looked at him and I said to myself, ‘This is the moment’. But he was walking and suddenly I saw his wife and children behind him. I couldn’t attack him in front of his family. We turned around and walked away, I don’t regret not attacking him. I didn’t end up doing anything that day,” Evra recalled years after the situation on the Diary of a CEO Podcast.
The player was defended after the game by former Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson, who wanted the situation to be resolved as quickly as possible and Luis Suarez to be punished.
In the following match between Manchester United and Liverpool, the two players clashed again. This time there were no insults or assaults. However, the players did not even shake hands to greet each other.
A lighter reconciliation perhaps occurred in 2015 when Barcelona and Juventus clashed in the Champions League final. Suarez played for Barcelona and Evra for Juventus. After the match, the two players shook hands and no rift arose.
