Manchester City unveil statue of Agüero outside their Etihad Stadium
The statue depicts Agüero’s ecstatic celebration after he scored the winning goal against Queens Park Rangers a decade ago to lead Manchester City to their first ever Premier League title.
“In truth, it’s a very beautiful thing for me, to see myself 10 years ago is very moving,” Agüero said , according to Marca. “In those 10 years I managed to win a lot of trophies and helped the club become one of the most important clubs in the world,” the Argentine canon added.
Although the footballer himself enjoyed the ceremony and was clearly moved by the unveiling of his former employer’s tribute, there have been mocking voices on the internet questioning the likeness of the former striker.
A post in which the likeness of the statue is more reminiscent of Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos went viral. Let’s take a look at the best and worst statues of football personalities.
The best football statues
Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester, Aberdeen
His bronze statue was unveiled by his wife Lady Cathy in 2012 when Manchester United celebrated his 25 years at the Red Devils. It’s also worth noting that he received a similar honour at his former job in Aberdeen. With the Scottish team, he won a total of 11 titles during his eight years as manager of the club.
Zidane – Materazzi, Paris
The statue, created by Algerian artist Adel Abdesseme, was unveiled in 2012 outside the Pompidou Center in Paris. It depicts Zinedine Zidane’s famous header at Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final.
Lev Yashin, Moscow
This is one of the most impressive football statues ever unveiled. The statue of goalkeeping legend Yashin is located in Petrovsky Park in Moscow.
The worst football statues
Cristiano Ronaldo, Madeira
The fact that Ronaldo’s family has asked for the statue to be replaced speaks for itself.
Carlos Valderrama, Santa Marta, Colombia
The statue of the Colombian legend, located at the entrance of the Eduardo Santos stadium, is also not one of the best we have the opportunity to see.
The statue of David Beckham is in a category of its own
As the Los Angeles Galaxy prepared to honour their legendary former player David Beckham with a statue outside the stadium, British actor and presenter James Corden came up with an ingenious prank on the star footballer.
Together with his team, they created a failed replica and the look of the famous midfielder spoke for itself.
