Oktagon fans missed out on two very interesting fights at the end of the year. One of them was supposed to feature Jonas Magard, but he was injured shortly before the tournament.
The reigning champion broke his collarbone when he took a knee to the face while sparring. Now, on OKTAGON Hype, he explains in detail how it happened to him.
“After training in England, I moved back home and went to the gym where I had a little sparring session. It got a little heated from both sides and I ended up getting kneed in the face. Unfortunately it broke my cheekbone.
I didn’t even feel it properly at first. I felt the knee, of course, which landed nicely, but it was just uncomfortable at first. I even have a video. I didn’t realise anything was wrong until I took off my gloves and ran them over my face.
I could clearly feel the hole. I showed it to my coach, who sent me to the hospital right away, where it turned out that my cheekbone was broken in three places and that I needed surgery. Of course, it sucks like hell,” said the Danish Shark.
He had to head there for surgery and lost the title match. But the organization didn’t take the title from him, Filip Macek only fought the alternate Gustavo Lopez for the interim title, which is now held by the American.
“At first I didn’t expect it to be so serious because the wound was just uncomfortable. It was a hard punch, but I wasn’t out of it to go down or anything like that. It just caught me off guard.
At that moment, all I could think about was if I had a laceration. I even wanted to go another round, but then I realized I had a hole in there and it was clear. I couldn’t even open my mouth properly.
Getting to the hospital wasn’t easy either. I had to take a train for another hour and a half before I got to the hospital and they took care of me relatively quickly,” he said.
So we’ll have to wait a few long months for his next fight. Unless something unexpected happens, he’s going to go toe-to-toe with Lopez.
