The English media confirmed the speculation that has been circulating in the football world in the last few hours. Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku will not feature in tonight’s showdown with Liverpool because of his recent interview with Sky Italia, where he said he was unhappy in his current position.
He went through a coronavirus before Christmas and only started training again a week ago. However, Romelu Lukaku got into the match workload almost immediately and by the end of the year he had scored in both of his remaining games, both for Aston Villa and Brighton.
His name, however, is currently being bandied about the most in relation to a weeks-old interview with Sky Italia, which was released on Thursday. In it, the Belgian sniper uttered that he is not satisfied with his role under Thomas Tuchel and one day he definitely wants to return to Inter Milan.
The German coach was understandably not left cold by the words of his key ward. At the press conference before the big game against Liverpool, he declared that he would have a proper talk with the most expensive Chelsea reinforcement in history.
“I don’t like it, but I don’t want to make it more than it really is. Because it is very easy to take a few lines out of context,” the Blues head coach said cautiously on the controversy.
Still, he ultimately decided to punish Lukaku for his unwise words, in a way that goes largely against the team itself. For the all-important clash between the Premier League’s second and third teams, which is played on Sunday from 17:30, he has placed him on the sidelines.
Chelsea already have more than enough problems of their own. Like most English teams, it is haunted by a coronavirus that will prevent the second striker Timo Werner from playing. The defensive ranks are being slashed by injuries, with Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva still out.
The game against Liverpool promises to be a thrilling, evenly matched battle for second place in England’s top competition. However, Thomas Tuchel will have his work cut out to put together a workable and competitive line-up.
