Luis Enrique is facing huge criticism in Spain. Many are upset that his national team is boring, doesn’t bring trophies and is also criticised for fielding his favourites. Now the La Roja coach has defended himself on Twitter.

Jaroslav Šilhavy is experiencing something similar in the Czech Republic and is also under a lot of criticism. Luis Enrique, however, is experiencing it in a much bigger way, as in Spain football is a religion and logically the most talked about topic.

Every time a big wave of criticism comes down on Enrique already during the nomination, another one during the selection of the squad. And if the result doesn’t work out, as it did against Switzerland on Saturday, the former Barcelona coach’s name is the most talked about in all of Spain.

In Tuesday’s match against Portugal, the Spaniards had to win to advance to the Final Four. But the whole game was very boring, Morata and co. just kept the ball mostly in their own half, almost the whole game they didn’t shoot on goal. So at halftime and during the game, the national team and Enrique were hugely criticized on social media.

In the end, it was the Atlético Madrid striker who fired the fifty-million-strong country to a last-minute win and thus qualification to the Nations League Final Four. And that got the blood pumping in Enrique’s veins. So he took to the social networking site Twitter to defend himself.

“Just to put things in context…,” Enrique tweeted, throwing in an excel spreadsheet.

In it, he compares the achievements of the strongest national teams in recent years. Nations League 2020 (Spain – runner-up), EURO 2020 (Spain – semi-finalist), World Cup qualification (Spain 1st in group), Nations League 2022 (Spain – Final Four).

Only Spain has been among the top four in the last competitions each time and has thus recorded success, according to Enrique. He further states that only Italy failed in one competition, the other national teams failed in at least two competitions.

But even with this, the demanding Spanish fans were not comforted by the 52-year-old coach. Most of them told him that Spain had not actually won anything and that comforting themselves with semi-finals and second places was not the winning mentality that belongs to this nation.
