Jürgen Klopp’s men travelled to Portugal to face Benfica as favourites. The Reds were able to fully confirm this role, as the English team’s offense forced its way into the opponent’s goal three times.
Naby Keita had the first chance of the match, but it was saved by goalkeeper Vlachodimos. But the Reds’ next chance ended up in the net. After Andrew Robertson’s corner kick, high stopper Ibrahima Konaté headed home – 0::1.
The game gradually gathered momentum and it was the English players who set the pace of the game. Luis Díaz gradually appeared in the chances and Mohammed Salah was also dangerous.
And despite not much pressure, the visitors managed to score for the second time. After a long ball, Luis Díaz got into the penalty area, got behind Benfica’s defence and knocked the ball down for Sadio Mané, who finished into the empty net – 0:2.
But Benfica managed to reduce the deficit right at the beginning of the second half. Rafa Silva managed to get the ball on the right side and centered it into the penalty area, where Ibrahima Konaté, the scorer of the first goal, made a huge mistake and missed the ball, and Darwin Núñez made no mistake – 1::2.
And it could have been even worse for the Reds, but goalkeeper Alisson intervened brilliantly against Everton’s hard shot. In the 67th minute, the Portuguese club’s players demanded a penalty, but referee Manzano was against it.
The next part of the game saw not many chances, only Luis Díaz’s attempt from a volley was worth mentioning, but it was not accurate.
And Luis Díaz had the last word again. After a great pass from Nabi Keita, he got around the goalkeeper Vlachodimos and sealed the win for Liverpool – 1::3.
The Reds won the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Benfica Lisbon 3-1 and are on their way to the semi-finals.
