Virgil Van Dijk will continue to wear the Liverpool jersey in the future. The Dutch stopper is one of the key players of the English club and his original contract was for two more years. By signing a new contract, he confirmed the extension of his cooperation until the summer of 2025.
Thirty-year-old Van Dijk joined the Reds camp in January 2018 for £75 million from Southampton and has worked his way up to become one of the best stoppers in the world. He has played 130 games for Liverpool so far, scoring 13 goals and was instrumental in winning the league title and triumphing in the Champions League.
“From the first day I arrived at Liverpool, I felt the appreciation of the fans, my teammates and the staff. It made me realise I could become a very valuable member of the team, ” he said.
Van Dijk is now returning to match fitness after a nine-month absence when he seriously injured his knee ligaments in the Merseyside derby. He underwent surgery and is back after a long rehabilitation. He should be back in the Liverpool starting line-up very soon.
“Everything was going great until last season. For me personally, it was a season I want to forget as soon as possible. However, it gave me time to learn and learn about myself. I’m enjoying my time at Liverpool and I hope that will continue to be the case,” he said.
“I think I’m ready for the start of the season. We’ll see what the manager decides. I’m looking forward to a great atmosphere. For me personally, it will be different than playing in front of empty stands. I’m looking forward to what my future with Liverpool will bring in the years to come,” Van Dijk added.
The 2020 league champion continues to extend the contracts of important players. Before Van Dijk, he had already managed to secure Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Alisson. This summer he still wants to agree an extension with Mohamed Salah.
