History is being rewritten in the prestigious millionaire competition. In the history of the competition, few teams have managed to win all their matches in the group stage. This year, two more teams have done it in the Champions League. But Bayern can do something much more unprecedented…
Yesterday, historical dates were rewritten by Liverpool FC and Ajax Amsterdam. The team led by German strategist Jürgen Klopp became the first ever English team to do so.
And the Reds faced an extremely tough group where they came up against Atlético Madrid, FC Porto and AC Milan. Nothing easy indeed. However, Liverpool were the only team in the group to collect a positive score (17::6) and won all their duels.
In the last round of the group, things did not look good for coach Klopp’s charges. They were 0:1 down at San Siro, but eventually managed to turn the game around and take full points for a 2:1 win.
Ajax Amsterdam came through their group with perhaps even more grace. It may have had a slightly easier draw than Liverpool, but the score of 20:5 must be awe-inspiring for all potential opponents who will face Ajax in the knockout stage of the Champions League.
These two teams therefore join the six historically successful clubs who have achieved this feat in the past.
And if Bayern can beat Barcelona at home, they will equal the record of Real Madrid, who are the only team to have done it twice, in 2011 and 2014.
It is also true that if the Bavarian giant actually beats the Catalans and Benfica beats Dynamo Kiev, it will mean that the famous Barcelona will not advance to the next stage of the Champions League and will only play in the Europa League.
