Bayern Munich were big favourites in their first Bundesliga game after the Christmas break. Most bookmakers had odds of 1.30 on a win, while odds approaching 10.00 could be found on the underdog from Mönchengladbach.
The Bavarian giant and table leader, however, was considerably weakened. Players such as Manuel Neuer, Kingsley Coman, Alphonso Davies, Leon Goretzka, Lucas Hernandez, Dayot Upamecano and Leroy Sané were unable to play.
However, Borussia’s tragic first half of the season had an impact on the odds. While Bayern were on a winning streak, Mönchengladbach were on a five-match winless streak (4 losses, 1 draw).
And the poor form of the visiting team was evident during the match. Already in the 18th minute, Bayern took the lead when Robert Lewandowski, who has already scored 20 goals in the Bundesliga, scored after an assist from Thomas Muller.
But Borussia fought back fiercely and still managed to turn things around in the first half. Florian Neuhaus equalised in the 27th minute to make it 1-1, and four minutes later Stefan Lainer made it 2-1.
In the second half, the home side tried to do something about the game, but the fact that coach Julian Nagelsmann had nowhere to turn didn’t help. At least it made club history when Paul Wanner became the youngest player ever to play for Bayern at the age of 16.
However, the Bavarian side had more shooting opportunities, but the opponent showed a fierce performance, pressed, tried to be active and that led to the three points.
It is worth mentioning that Bayern has not been beaten in two league matches this season, nor in the cup. The first league match ended in a 1-1 draw, while in the cup Bayern were beaten 0-5.
Three points are important for Borussia. The table is very balanced and the gap to the relegation places is not big at all. This is also great news for rivals Dortmund, who can close the gap to Bayern to 5 points this weekend, which could make the title battle more dramatic.
