Graham Potter’s engagement at Stamford Bridge was short-lived. He was recalled after the home loss to Aston Villa and is expected to be replaced by club legend Frank Lampard by the end of the season. Will he repair his reputation?

For the footballing public, the departure of Thomas Tuchel from Chelsea was a big surprise. He was replaced by Graham Potter, until then Brighton coach. But the move didn’t work at all.

The team under Potter didn’t lose their opening eight games, but then came the crisis. Chelsea started to fall down the table, very soon they dropped out of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. The only positive was their progression to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Todd Boehly’s patience ran out after a 0-2 home defeat to Aston Villa, which saw the Blues drop into the second half of the Premier League table. On Tuesday against Liverpool, Bruno Saltor was already leading the team as head coach.

It was obvious that this was only a temporary solution. Chelsea should therefore have agreed a deal with Frank Lampard. The top scorer in the club’s history agreed with the team management to stay at the helm of Chelsea until the end of the current season. This information was confirmed by renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Lampard is therefore returning to a position he knows very well. In fact, he has already led the team from west London between 2019-2021. He lasted 84 games on the Chelsea bench, with an average of 1.75 points per game.

It will be very interesting to see if Lampard can repair his reputation. He has nine Premier League games ahead of him, but the priority will surely be advancing in the Champions League, where he will face Real Madrid.

The question remains who will lead Chelsea from the summer. Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann remain the main candidates. However, if Lampard is successful, his staying on is not out of the question.
