Toni Kroos is officially back in the German national football team, and we will see if it is just for the EURO or for a longer period of time. Journalist Fabrizio Romano came up with the news this afternoon. The return of the Real Madrid and Germany legend has been speculated for quite some time.
Kroos in the national team
Toni Kroos made his debut for Germany in March 2010. He was immediately part of the squad at the World Cup in South Africa, where his national team won at least a bronze medal. However, the German midfielder played only second fiddle in the team, playing only 60 minutes for the entire championship. The biggest portion was 28 minutes in the semi-final against Spain.
During the qualification for the upcoming EURO 2012 Kroos played almost all the minutes. However, he didn’t get much of a “sniff” again at the championship. He played just under 4 and 9 minutes in the regular group. In the quarter-finals he even sat on the bench for the whole game. Only in the semi-finals did he start in the starting line-up and for 90 minutes.
As he got older, even though Kroos was only 23 years old, he became a cornerstone of the German national team. Almost the only player on the team at the World Cup-winning tournament in Brazil, he played all the minutes, not missing a single minute in any of the games, not even in one of the extra time periods. He was simply indispensable.
EURO 2016 was the same style. On the way to the semi-finals, Kroos played all the minutes. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for anything more than the semi-final loss to host France.
The 2018 World Cup, however, was the beginning of the end. Germany suffered a championship hangover and a farewell right after the group stage. Above all, the loss to South Korea will not be forgotten in Germany.
The last big championship for Kroos was EURO 2021. Germany advanced from the group of death with Portugal, France and Hungary. However, the very first knockout match ended in disappointment, with a 0:2 loss to England, who eventually reached the final. Kroos thus finished his national team career on 29 June 2021 with 106 starts.
The current season
Currently, Kroos is still playing at the highest level. Although for the last few seasons it seemed that his long-time teammate Luka Modric was outplaying Kroos, this season has proved everyone wrong. Kroos is lively on the pitch, dishing out millimetre passes, as he always does. In minutes, he clearly outshines his Croatian teammate.
Among other things, Kroos’ passing success rate has not dropped below 90% since the 2013/14 season. He even finished last season with an incredible 95% accuracy. So speculation has begun as to whether he should still wear the national jersey in view of the domestic championship.
In the end, Kroos decided to return to the national team and will undergo one more big tournament. “I am convinced that this team can do special things at the Euros,” he says of the national team. Given the poor form of Bayern, where the majority of the national team is based, Kroos will once again be one of the most important players in the team.
