Juventus failed to win their first game without Ronaldo, failing to beat the Serie A newcomer at home and not scoring a goal
Juventus have lost their biggest star and it has to be said that a player of Cristiano Ronaldo’s calibre would have come in handy for Massimiliano Allegri’s charges on Saturday night. Even due to their trifling productivity, the Bianconeri fell to a newcomer on home soil.
Second game of the new Serie A season, second game without a win. In the first round, Juventus could only manage a 2-2 draw with Udinese, but now at home they were no match for Empoli, the league newcomer from Tuscany.
While in the first match Juventus still had Cristiano Ronaldo available, but he came only from the substitutes’ bench and did not show anything after his arrival on the pitch, against Empoli the Portuguese star was no longer in the squad.
As we already know, Ronaldo is a new Manchester United player. Considering the shooting stats he has achieved at Juventus, it is to some extent to be expected that this will have an effect on the productivity of the Turin side.
Quite possibly, it already showed against Empoli. In fact, Juventus were the better team against the Tuscan outfit, sending twice as many shots not only overall but also between the three posts. However, not a single shot ended in a goal.
It can be said that Federico Chiesa was the only dangerous player in the Bianconeri team, but he was simply not enough to pull the offensive line. He had a few interesting shots, but the opposing goalkeeper did a great job against him.
The Turin team then sent many centred balls into the sixth, but there was no one who could capitalise on them. Until recently, it was Ronaldo, whose great leaping ability increased the effectiveness of the centres many times over.
It will be interesting to see how and how quickly Juventus will cope with his departure. Many people have argued that Ronaldo hindered the Turin outfit’s offensive and minimized its potential. However, the first game after his departure proved otherwise. Will that change?
