In the autumn of 2015, Jürgen Klopp sat on the Liverpool bench as head coach. In the 2019/20 season, he led the Reds to the coveted league title, the year before he managed to win the Champions League. And after less than nine years, he will abandon ship. The information about his departure was shared by Liverpool on their social media.
During the 2015/16 season, he replaced Brendan Rodgers as the head coach of the A-team with the aim of returning Liverpool to the imaginary throne. He came to England as a two-time Bundesliga champion with Borussia Dortmund, with whom he triumphed in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons.
Ever since his arrival, fans of the highly successful English side have expected him to win the biggest trophies. And it is safe to say that Klopp has fulfilled his mission. The sixty-six-year-old German coach has slowly but surely remade Liverpool in his own image. And the successes have come.
Klopp and his championship purchases
Gradually, players on whom future successes rested began to join the Reds. And it was coach Klopp who was behind these stunning transfers.
In 2016, Joel Matip and Sadio Mané arrived at Anfield Road. A year later, Mohamed Salah, already the best goalscorer in the club’s history, transferred to Liverpool, followed by the arrivals of players like Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk and Allison Becker.
Trophies won
The Reds already had a chance to win the famous Eared Cup, the trophy for the Champions League winners, in the 2017/18 season. However, in the final match, they lost to Real Madrid in Spain 1:3 after a memorable shortcut by goalkeeper Loris Karius.
In the 2018/19 season, however, everything turned around for the better. At the end of the season, the English side celebrated their sixth ever Champions League trophy, winning 2-0 against Tottenham in the final. Not only the German coach, it must be said, breathed a loud sigh of relief.
The following season, Klopp also added the English Premier League title to his collection. Liverpool had waited an incredible 30 years for this trophy.
The end of the story
“I will leave the club at the end of the season,” Klopp began his interview with the club’s website. “I understand it’s a shock for people to hear that,” the German coach continued.
There is no illness behind Klopp’s departure, which he confirmed in the interview. However, he also stated that he is running out of energy and simply needs some fresh impetus and also some rest. However, of course, he would like to say goodbye by winning a trophy. “Let’s squeeze everything out of this season, and when we look back afterwards, we will smile,” he added.
Bottom line, Klopp has won seven trophies with the famous English outfit. In 2018/19, it was the Champions League, while 2019 meant winning the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup. Then in the 2019/20 season, Liverpool won the Premier League title, and later the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Community Shield.
