Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 3:2 in the weekend’s showpiece match. However, the match will still have to be played. After the game, Jude Bellingham did not mince his words and criticized the performance of the head referee, Felix Zwayer! Thematch was decided by a controversial penalty and the police are now looking into the case.
In the 75th minute, with the score level at 2-2, defender Mats Hummels probably played his hand, and head referee Zwayer did not take the penalty kick at first. A minute later, however, he signalled that the situation would eventually be reviewed.
And VAR subsequently ruled. The penalty was of course taken by Robert Lewandowski who, as usual, made no mistake and scored the decisive goal of the match. He still had a great chance to score in the 70th minute, when his shot from a direct free kick from the edge of the penalty area significantly threatened the home goal.
However, the goal did not come, his attempt just missed the top bar. The match ended 3: 2 for the visiting team. Bellingham was very angry after the end of the match and may face a heavy penalty for his comments!
“You give the biggest match in Germany to a referee who used to influence matches, so what do you expect,” the Dortmund midfielder said in his post-match interview.
“For me it was definitely not a penalty. Neither he (Hummels) nor I were looking at the ball. Then he just hit it. There were a lot of strange decisions in the match, you can look at them,” he explained.
The England international was also referring to Zwayer’s six-month ban by the FA in 2005 following a match-fixing scandal. Zwayer’s decision was then also criticised by the home coach, Marco Rose, who subsequently received a second yellow card for it!
“I saw that Hummels played with his hand. So I asked myself the question – is the arm extended away from the body a foul or not? In real time it was not visible whether Hummels moved his arm towards the ball or not,” Zwayer explained the situation in an interview with Sky Sports Germany.
“The video assistant told me during the examination that the Dortmund defender had his arm in an unnatural position. In the end, he clearly deflected the ball with his elbow and I came to the decision that it was a penalty,” he concluded.
Bellingham’s statement is now under investigation by German police. A criminal complaint has been filed against him and the case will be referred to the prosecutor’s office in Dortmund. The court will decide whether he is guilty or innocent. A final decision is expected at the end of this week.
