Oktagon MMA becomes a European organization

The biggest Czechoslovak MMA organization Oktagon is no longer just a domestic product. This year, it expanded abroad for the first time, specifically selling out Frankfurt’s Festhalle in early June.

Next weekend, MMA fans can look forward to yet another gala in Frankfurt. The Oktagon 36 tournament features a card of European parameters, and that’s not all. Karlos Vémola recently leaked the information that Oktagon is going to Munich next year.

However, that’s not all on the European front either. The organization has already begun its conquest of the British market by promoting its tournaments on the Oktagon UK & Ireland YouTube channel. Here, the charismatic Bryan Lacey acts as the main presenter, introducing Oktagon’s projects to the British audience.

In Germany you have to have a fax machine, says promoter Novotný

After his experience of organising tournaments in Germany, Oktagon promoter and co-owner Ondřej Novotný describes the obstacles that make it difficult for the Oktagon team to do their job. Novotný answered a question from an iSport editor at the Sport Alive 2022 conference about how hosting tournaments abroad is different.

“In Germany, for example, MMA cannot be broadcast before 11 o’clock, there are restrictions that make you feel like you’ve gone not to the West but to the Far East,” he outlines the difficulties the German market brings. “It’s a terribly difficult market, a terribly big market and any success there is a drop in the ocean,” he said.

“When Facebook works here, it doesn’t exist, when TV advertising works here, the Sunday mailbox flyer doesn’t exist,” he describes other snags in our western neighbours. ” That’s where I always tell people how crazy the world is, that they will ask you if you actually have a real office and a fax machine in Germany,” he added.

“In England, again, he doesn’t like the audience

“In England, on the other hand, MMA and fighting as such are popular again,” he offered a comparison with Britain. “But they’re popular with people we don’t want there at those tournaments, so we have to change that audience and make it a nice audience,” which is awfully hard,” he realizes.

“But we think we have a recipe to succeed there,” the promoter believes in his team’s abilities. So will we see tournaments not only in Germany but also in the British Isles in 2023?
