The TV rights to broadcast some of the Top 5 leagues is a huge business. And whoever gets them has the right to set the price as they please.
But that’s the problem. And there is a lot of complaining from fans in Spain right now, where the price of sports channels that broadcast La Liga is skyrocketing.
The Spanish are the most expensive of the Top 5 leagues in this respect. Fans pay 109.45 euros, or roughly 2,500 crowns per month, for the Movistar and Orange TV channels, which broadcast La Liga, La Liga Hypermotion and Champions League matches.
Fans in England then pay less for the Premier League. For the BT Sport, Sky Sports and Amazon channels, a fan will pay 85.23 euros, or just over 2,000 crowns.
A noticeable drop is then found when switching to the Bundesliga. Germans who want to watch football pay 49.99 euros per month for the Sky and Dazn platforms. That’s 1200 crowns. And Germans have significantly higher average salaries than in Spain.
In France, viewers pay 38.23 euros for Amazon Prime and Canal+, which is just over 900 crowns a month. The cheapest is Portugal’s Sport TV, which offers Portuguese league viewing for 25.99 euros, or roughly 624 crowns.
Fans struggle a lot with the high prices for football on TV. La Liga viewing figures are down in official figures, partly due to the fact that many fans find a pirated stream or go to the pub to watch rather than pay for €109 sports channels at home.
