Roman Abramovich announced his intention to sell Chelsea this week in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. How might his departure affect the future of the club? Coach Thomas Tuchel has also weighed in on the subject and has no problem with him remaining at Chelsea.
For 19 years, the Russian billionaire has financed a large expenditure on the Blues’ playing staff. However, after his departure, it will be more than uncertain whether the club will be able to afford this after the change of ownership. Unless a new wealthy owner is found, it is unlikely that the club will invest massively in the playing squad this summer.
Abramovich’s decision to leave Chelsea comes just three months before the transfer window opens. So there is not much time for a change of ownership. In addition, the club has to deal with players’ expiring contracts, negotiating with captain Cesar Azpilicueta and fellow defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
All three have contracts that expire at the end of the season. The trio have already been approached by other European clubs and the uncertainty at Chelsea could influence their decision on whether to stay at Stamford Bridge.
But Tuchel remains positive and believes Chelsea will remain attractive to the players regardless of Abramovich’s presence.
“I still hope for the best, I still think we have something to offer, but I still think Chelsea is a strong club and will remain a strong club. Our owner has decided to sell the club and he is selling a strong, solid and very well organised club at the highest level,” Tuchel said.
Thomas Tuchel is under contract until 2024. He won the Champions League and the Club World Cup with Chelsea.
So far this season, Chelsea is third in the Premier League. He recently lost on penalties in the EFL Cup final to Liverpool. On the other hand, in the FA Cup, it continues further after an eight-final victory over Luton. They beat Lille 2-0 in the first quarter-final match of the LM and are well placed for the rematch.
