Tomas Hertl is really getting going in Vegas. In the last game he celebrated his first goal, now he scored the winning goal in overtime against the super-strong Colorado team led by the star Nathan MacKinnnon! And his Vegas Golden Knights pulled off a stunning turnaround.
The Golden Knights did not enter one of the last games of the regular season of the current NHL season well at all. In their home game against Colorado, they were already down 0:2 after the first period.
Ross Colton opened the scoring seven minutes after the opening faceoff. Cale Makar also scored for the Avalanche after half of the first period. Nathan MacKinnon, the NHL’s second leading scorer, and Artturi Lehkonen assisted on the goal.
The home fans rejoiced at the 26:57 mark when the score was reduced to 1:2, but their joy didn’t last long. Neither did the author of this goal, Tomas Hertl, who was not recognized after a coach’s challenge.
Not long after that, the visitors increased their lead to three goals when Mikko Rantanen scored accurately. But the Golden Knights then clearly owned the third period.
Ivan Barbashev scored just three minutes after the start of the period, followed by two goals from William Karlsson. Vegas took the game into overtime, where after one minute and twenty-three seconds, it was Hertl who decided the home team’s victory!
With this win, the Golden Knights moved one point closer to third place in the Pacific Division. Avoiding a clash with the top team in the first round of the Stanley Cup, which they would have appreciated if they had stayed in the wild card position.
Hertl after the game against Colorado…
“It’s great to win against a strong team like Colorado. And it’s always great to score in overtime. We played simple, scored some goals. We want to get ready for the playoffs and I hope to score a few more goals in the playoffs,” said Hertl, who had one goal disallowed during the game after a coach’s challenge.
“Actually it’s good. The winning goal in overtime is better. But I still think it could have paid. The goalie was a bit out of it in my opinion. I enjoyed it, my kids came to see me play for the first time, so I hope they saw the goal. It’s fun to play here,” added the author of the winning goal.
