Goose bumps guaranteed. The pre-match party at Betis Stadium is second to none
Before the duel with Girona, Betis launched a dance challenge to the song “Despechá” by Rosalía, and besides the fans, the announcers and security joined in.
Real Betis is one of the top teams in the La Liga table, this year they are in fourth place. But as far as the fans are concerned, you’d probably be looking in vain for competition. After all, Betis supporters are among the best Spain has to offer and the Estadio Benito Villamarín offers a living hell.
You just don’t get points from the Benito Villamarín. As far as home games are concerned, Betis are the best of the whole La Liga, winning all five of their games, with a full 15 points and a 10-2 record.
The visitors are not playing well in the Andalusian capital. The Benito Villamarín hosts 60,000 green and white fans who are capable of creating a living hell.
But it all starts before the game, when Betis create an environment in which the opponents are not breathing well. The last time Almería experienced this was at the weekend.
Moments before the players run onto the pitch, the entire stadium goes dark, the fans switch on their mobile phone lights and a musician runs onto the pitch with a trumpet.
The biggest hit of the summer, ‘Quedate’, rings through the stadium, but instead of the familiar lyrics, the fans sing ‘Otra vez, que la Copa a casa vuelve’, which translates as ‘Let the Cup come home again’, alluding to Betis’ triumph in the Copa del Rey last year.
At Betis, a similar pre-match party is a tradition. Traditionally, the song ‘Stereo Love’ is played over the loudspeakers, spiced up by a violinist on the pitch before the duel with Osasuna.
