Monday’s football programme will be spiced up by Girona’s match against Atletico Madrid. The home team is trying to save their place in La Liga, while the visitors are aiming to qualify for the Champions League through the top 4. What to expect from the match and what to bet on?
Girona have picked themselves up in recent weeks, winning three of the last five rounds, one of which was against Barcelona. It is 11th in the table, but has only a five-point lead in the extremely balanced second half of the table for relegation.
Atlético’s system without European cups suits it, having won 14 points from the last six rounds in the league. The focus on domestic competition suits them. Securing the Champions League is a matter of time, they are now third in the table, six points ahead of fifth place.
Girona’s key figures
Club legend and captain Cristian Stuani is still firing sharp, with the Uruguayan striker having netted seven goals already. His South American offensive partner Taty Castellanos is also doing well, assisting once in addition to his seven shots.
Atlético’s key figures
Frenchman Antoine Griezmann has brought good form from Qatar, he is currently on nine goals and 11 assists. Belgian national winger Yannick Carrasco has opened the net five times and assisted twice.
What to expect and what to bet on?
Girona may be picking up points, but the defence is not ideal. 38 goals conceded is the fourth worst figure in the league, they have scored two or more goals in their last four games, while not playing any top team.
Atlético has returned to its defensive standard after a worse start, with 19 goals conceded it has the third best defence after Real and Barcelona. It has scored only three times in the past six games.
Considering the improved form of the whole Atlético team, especially the defence, the individual quality of Griezmann and the troubled Girona defence, I think Madrid will win.
