The sad news hit all of football Germany on Sunday afternoon. The legendary striker Gerd Müller died at the age of 75.
Gerd Müller tormented the heads of defenders and generally all his opponents between 1963 and 1982. He spent most of his career in a Bayern Munich jersey, where he became an undisputed legend.
He began his career in his native Nordlingen before being noticed by the Bavarian side. He played for Bayern from 1964 until 1979. He played 607 games for Bayern, scoring a remarkable 566 goals and adding over 100 assists.
Müller collected one individual award after another, becoming the top scorer in various competitions almost twenty times. He reigned in the Bundesliga, the European Champions Cup, the Euros and the World Cup.
No wonder he rightfully won the Ballon d’Or in 1970. As far as team trophies are concerned, with Bayern he dominated the German league and the local cup four times and the European Champions Cup three times. However, this is just a list of the most valuable trophies.
But he also shone in the national team. He scored a staggering 68 goals in 62 matches for the national team, scoring 10 goals at the 1970 World Cup, for example, and two years later he scored four goals at the Euros, securing Germany’s victory at the tournament.
In 1974, he also won the world championship. In short, a unique career during which he set several records.
He continued to play football after his playing career. He was a member of the Bayern Munich management team from 1992 to 2014.
Unfortunately, in his last years he suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, due to which he lived in seclusion. He lived to the age of 75. A remarkable footballer, but above all an outstanding man who left behind a magnificent legacy.
