Newcastle United, owned by the Saudi Crown Prince, will soon announce a major player signing from French side Lyon. Who are we talking about?
Twenty-four-year-old Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes is expected to be announced soon as Newcastle United’s latest signing. The Canaries’ national team wide man has so far played in the French Ligue 1, where he donned the jersey of Olympique Lyon. Not only the Magpies, but also Arsenal, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain have been keen on the arrival of Guimaraes.
How much should Newcastle’s transfer of the midfielder cost? Sky Sports reports a figure of £40 million, the amount of the salary has not been disclosed yet.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, who specialises in transfers across Europe, Guimaraes has already undergone a medical and is expected to move to the British Isles after the national break.
“We hope that we are closer to signing a contract between the club and the player. Although unforeseen events may still happen in the final stages of negotiations, we believe that Bruno will become a Newcastle United player,” commented Eddie Howe, coach of the North of England club, via video call.
Why were several big players in the market for the Brazilian? He is a technically advanced central midfielder who can set up attacks and hold up the ball well.
He is characterized by his hard work, high mileage. At a time when he is playing in top form, he is likely to earn a very favourable transfer.
At least financially. The salary he’ll be getting at Newcastle will be fabulous. The question is whether he’s letting go of his sporting ambitions a little. From Lyon, where he played in the Champions League last year, he is going to a team fighting to stay in the Premier League.
Only the future will tell whether this was a good move or whether Guimaraes is facing a change that can be roughly defined as follows: Champions League for Championship.
