At the start of the season, Christophe Galtier seemed to have managed to balance a star-studded PSG perfectly. The team was treading water in the league and European Cups, but gradually lost momentum, culminating in a second place finish in the LM group.
Even after the World Cup in Qatar, where Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé were the tournament’s best players, Paris’ results did not pick up. On the contrary, the team lost the crucial home game against Bayern 0:1.
The head coach’s position is suddenly very tilted. Ending already in the Champions League eighth round would most likely mean a sacking, so Paris will basically have to fight for their own coach in two weeks.
According to the Scottish Daily Express, one of the candidates for the coveted job is Steven Gerrard. He has been without a contract since last autumn, when he quit due to disappointing results on the Everton bench.
Gerrard has been much more successful on the Rangers FC bench. In the 2020/21 season he won the Scottish Premiership with them, but was stopped in the Europa League by Slavia in the eighth round.
Anyway, when Gerrard took over Aston Villa in November 2021, the team had ambitions to play for at least mid-table. However, the reality was different and Aston Villa only secured their league affiliation three rounds before the end last year.
Yet the quality of the squad was cup-worthy, entering this season with the seventh most expensive roster in the league. When Birmingham bid Gerrard farewell, much was made of his inability to work with stars. And that would be a problem at PSG.
