Former Arsenal players tried to send Tottenham out of the Champions League, in the end it’s Marseille who are without trophies
Marseille had a great game, but it turned into a horror in the second half. The French team won’t even play in the Europa League playoffs this spring after Pierre-Emile Højbjerg took that opportunity away from them in stoppage time.
Marseille had a great game, but it turned into a horror in the second half. The French team won’t even play in the Europa League playoffs this spring after Pierre-Emile Højbjerg took that opportunity away from them in stoppage time. The former Arsenal charges didn’t help either.
When Chancel Mbemba scored at the end of the first half to make it 1-0, the Stade Vélodrome erupted in huge celebrations. All the fans had already seen the top two places in the table.
And they certainly had reason to do so, as the French side, for whom the pair of Alexis Sánchez and Mattéo Guendouzi, who had been at Arsenal, Spurs’ arch-foe, were the better team in the first half.
After half-time, however, they were definitely more dangerous for Antonio Conte’s charges, who watched the game from the stands. First, defender Clément Lenglet equalised and in the fourth minute of stoppage time, the aforementioned Danish midfielder took a much-needed point from Marseille.
Marseille were in a great position after two wins against Sporting, but losses to Frankfurt and Tottenham left them on the back foot, with the Portuguese side, who have one more point, taking third place.
This underlines the misery of the French side of late, as they have only picked up a single point from their draw with Strasbourg in their last 5 games. Because of this, Sánchez and co. have dropped to 5th place, as they are already 6 points behind 2nd placed Lens.
For Tottenham, on the other hand, this is the second turnaround in a row, having even lost 2-0 to Bournemouth at the weekend. Rodrigo Bentancur scored the winning goal in the first minute of stoppage time to make it 2: 3.
Spurs are not to be underestimated and can look forward to the play-offs, which they go into from first place. They are third in the Premier League, 5 points behind leaders Arsenal.
