A shared history at the Laver Cup
The elite duo took part in this team competition on its debut, in 2017 this great sporting event took place in Prague. Nadal and Federer played a legendary doubles match in this edition. The Swiss-Spanish duo defeated the American pair Sock-Querrey 6::4, 1::6 and 10::5.
They also took part in the tournament in 2019, when the tournament visited Geneva, Switzerland. Federer and Nadal both appeared in the doubles again, but this time with different partners. They didn’t participate in last year’s Laver Cup in Boston, but the European selection still declassed the world selection players 14:1 on points. European tennis players have also dominated the three previous editions.
“I’m really looking forward to my return to tennis, the Laver Cup is undoubtedly part of my plan,” Federer remarked to England’s Eurosport.
“Rafa is a great inspiration for me and for millions of people around the world. After last year’s Laver Cup in Boston, he suggested to me that we could play a doubles match in London. And I am definitely in favour of the return of the ‘Fedal’ pair!” said the Swiss.
“The Laver Cup is a special event,” said the 35-year-old Nadal. “I told Roger I wanted to play doubles with him. He seems excited, so we only have to convince Captain Bjorn,” said the winner of 21 Grand Slam tournaments.
“Roger is a big part of my career. He has always been a great rival for me, but also a great friend. To be on the same team with him and to play doubles alongside him once more would be a fantastic experience,” added Nadal.
The Swiss’ big comeback should take place at Wimbledon
the 35-year-old Nadal became the Australian Open champion a few days ago, reaching his 21st career Grand Slam title. In the historical table, he is alone in first place, only one triumph less are Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
the 40-year-old Swiss has played just 19 matches in the last two years, with his last competitive match coming at Wimbledon last year. He has undergone several knee surgeries during this period to extend his career.
Federer is expected to return to the courts within the next few months, with the highlight of the season for him being his beloved Wimbledon.
