Liverpool welcomed Newcastle United to Anfield Road yesterday, 16 December, as part of the seventeenth round of the English top flight. It should be noted, they haven’t lost to this opponent at home for 27 years!
The Reds were clearly in control of this match, although the first goal of the match was scored by the visitors. Jonjo Shelvey was not afraid to shoot from quite a distance and his shot ended up in the bottom left corner of the net – 1::0 for Newcastle.
After that, however, it was Jürgen Klopp’s men who were in charge. In the 21st minute, Diogo Jota scored from close range to level the match at 1:1. Four minutes later, Mohamed Salah added another goal and Liverpool took a 2-1 lead.
The score then remained unchanged for a very long time, until the 87th minute, when we witnessed probably the most beautiful moment of the whole match. This is how Alexander-Arnold got his hands on the ball – his long-range shot beautifully hit the top left corner! Simply a fantasy.
As we write above, Liverpool literally outplayed their rival, not only in terms of game concept, but also in terms of statistics.
Possession of the ball 74% to 26% for the Reds, the home footballers also clearly outshot Newcastle (23::5). Eddie Howe’s confidants did not play a single corner kick in the match, whereupon Liverpool had eleven of them at their disposal. And we could go on and on.
However, it should also be noted that Liverpool became the first team to reach the historic milestone of the 2000th victory in the top English competition with this win!
The Reds are currently second in the league table with 40 points. They are only one point behind the leader (Manchester City) and have a three-point lead over third-placed Chelsea. The next match awaits Klopp’s charges on Sunday 19 December at Tottenham.
