Russia still hasn’t stopped its invasion of Ukraine, and it’s paying the price in the sports world. In football, for example, Russian clubs cannot play in European cups. However, this is not enough for some. One Bundesliga club has now called on UEFA to exclude clubs from the state that support Russia.
Already at the end of February, Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine. It is still going on today and it does not seem that the state run by Vladimir Putin intends to stop. This is despite any possible sanctions or punishments, which Russian athletes have not escaped.
Russian football clubs, for example, cannot play in European cups. In addition, foreigners who play in Russia can leave Russian clubs and get out of their contracts under specific conditions. But that may not be enough for someone who upholds human values.
Belarus, for example, is one of Russia’s biggest supporters of the aforementioned aggression. But in the football world, there have been no punishments so far. Now, however, a German team is up for it.
This is because Bundesliga side Cologne will be playing a qualifier in the Conference Europa League and it is possible that they could potentially run into one of the Belarusian clubs. He would like to avoid that. He therefore called on UEFA to exclude the Belarusian clubs.
In particular, FK BATE Borisov, FK Homel, FK Shakhzjor Salihorsk and FK Dinamo Minsk.
“In view of the political situation and the support given to Russia by Belarus in its attack on Ukraine, we call on UEFA to take decisive action and ban Belarusian teams from the competition,” Cologne said in a statement.
In the statement, Cologne reiterated its commitment to liberal values, diversity and peaceful coexistence. It condemned the proximity of the Belarusian government to Russia, which is quite visible in public. According to the German club’s management, not only the values of Cologne but of the whole sport are being violated.
Among other things, the sympathetic German club has contacted other German clubs as well as the local football association to join the appeal.
