Everton appealed against the deduction of points. Does it have a chance to succeed?
The Liverpool-based club has had to deal with some very unpleasant news in recent days and weeks. Following the decision of an independent committee, the club was given a penalty of ten points deduction – this meant a drop to the relegation places of the Premier League for the charges of coach Sean Dyche.
Everton has had to deal with some very unpleasant news in recent days and weeks. Following the decision of an independent committee, the club was given a penalty of ten points deduction – this meant a drop to the relegation places of the Premier League for the charges of coach Sean Dyche.
Everton are currently at the tail end of the Premier League table, with four points, they are second to last place, only Burnley are worse, who have the same number of points, but have a worse record compared to Everton.
The start of the season didn’t look so bad for The Toffees. After 12 rounds played they had 14 points, which gave them quite a solid lead over the teams moving in the relegation zone.
However, on 17 November 2023, some very unpleasant news came to light. Everton broke the financial rules and lost 10 points because of it. “The severity and severity of the sanction imposed is not a fair or justifiable consequence of the evidence presented,” the club statement said.
The club’s management was given the opportunity to appeal the verdict within 14 days, which it did. “Everton Football Club has today lodged an appeal with the chairman of the Premier League Judicial Committee against the decision of the Premier League Commission to impose a ten-point deduction on the club. An appeals panel will now be appointed to hear the case,” the club said on its website.
It is the highest points deduction in Premier League history. Before Everton, only three clubs had points deducted, namely Middlesbrough (1996/97, three points deducted), Portsmouth (2009/10, nine points deducted).
Tottenham lost 12 points before the 1994/95 season for financial irregularities. They had committed these a few seasons earlier, but this penalty was eventually overturned.
When will the final decision be made and does Everton have a chance to succeed?
The profit and sustainability rules allow Premier League clubs to run a deficit of no more than £105 million over a three-year period. Everton made a loss of £44.7m in the 2021/22 season. In the three-year period, it recorded a total loss of £124.5 million. The Liverpool club admitted breaking those rules during a five-day hearing.
A final verdict is expected by the end of this season. What may play in Everton’s favour is that, following its appeal, the whole case will be reviewed by a newly-constituted panel.
