European Cup results: Plšek almost scored again, Trnava averted humiliation

On Thursday, 33 matches of the first round of the European Conference League were played. Two Slovak teams advanced, three Czech footballers playing in Puskás Academy also advanced.

Slovakia’s Žilina was already virtually certain to qualify before the rematch, having won 5:0 at home against Georgian Doli. However, in the rematch they lost valuable points in the coefficient and at the same time embarrassed themselves by losing 1:2.

Spartak Trnava, who unexpectedly lost to Malta’s Mosta 2: 3 in their first match, also advanced. In the rematch they won 2: 0 and will also play the second preliminary round of the Europa League.

Slovenian Maribor confirmed their role as favourites and after two 1: 0 wins over Armenian Urartu they move on.

In the “royal derby”, Welsh side The New Saints beat Northern Ireland’s Glentoran 2:0, as expected, which was enough for them to qualify thanks to a draw in the opening game.

Three Czechs are also through to the next round. Puskás Akadémia defeated Inter Turku 2: 0 (the first match ended in a 1: 1 draw), with both Patrizio Stronati and Jakub Plšek in the line-up (Libor Kozák did not play). The latter even hit the bar once.

Among the more famous teams, Wroclaw, Irish Bohemians, Domažle, and Levadia Talin, who both Sparta and Slavia have played in the last decade, have also qualified. For a full list of the qualifiers, visit the UEFA website.
