England face punishment for laser in Schmeichel’s face and fans booing during Danish anthem

An official statement from UEFA today says that disciplinary proceedings have been opened with England. Its fans are said to have committed three offences. The biggest “snub” was probably the laser in Kasper Schmeichel’s face before Kane’s penalty that decided the game in extra time.

Schmeichel took the penalty despite the laser in his face, but it was not enough to stop Harry Kane’s subsequent goal. He thus steered his team to the final of Euro 2020.

However, for the first time, English fans were guilty before the game, booing during the Danish national anthem. They do this, by the way, (for unfathomable reasons) before every match at the European Championship, including the match against the Czech national football team.

And for the third time after the game! Fans set off fireworks in the immediate vicinity of the stadium during the exuberant post-match celebrations. Which, as it turned out, UEFA was not going to tolerate either.

Its official statement today says: “Following the UEFA EURO 2020 semi-final match between England and Denmark (2:1) played on 7 July at Wembley Stadium in London, disciplinary proceedings have been initiated.” The case will be dealt with by UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) in due course.

It is not clear exactly what the punishment will be, but it is likely that the English FA will be heavily fined.

It is therefore certain that the final will already be played with the line-up in question. The England-Italy match is due to kick off this Sunday at 9pm (CET) at Wembley in London.
