Emery’s Villa simply attracts: Sevilla, Villarreal and now Aston Villa. The charismatic Spaniard returns to the Premier League

Unai Emery is definitely not afraid of big challenges and is willing to leave a good project for a better one. This time, he leaves Villarreal for Aston Villa, where Steven Gerrard had to get up from the coaching chair, far from fulfilling the club’s ambitions.

The Spanish coach already has experience of the Premier League. He spent around 16 months on the Arsenal bench before being sacked by the management. He left the Gunners with a record of 78 games, 43 wins and 20 losses.

Nothing miraculous, but we have to take into account the fact that the London team was at that time at a low level in terms of player quality. But it was under Emery that two important players of today’s Mikel Arteta’s team came to the Emirates Stadium.

Namely Bukayo Saka, who made his way into the A-team at the age of 17, and Gabriel Martinelli, who cost the Gunners €7 million. However, Nicolas Pépé also came from Lille for 80 million euros, or David Luiz for less than 9 million euros.

That’s history, of course, and it will now be written by Emery at Aston Villa, incidentally the 7th most valuable team (506 million euros) in the Premier League, the 6th being Arsenal (666 million euros).

In Birmingham, the 50-year-old experienced coach will have a very interesting team, but one that needs some impetus. But that is exactly what the charismatic Spaniard should have no problems with.

His cup success speaks for itself. After three Europa League titles with Sevilla, he managed to win a fourth trophy, namely in the 2020/21 season with Villarreal. The Villans fans could thus hope for at least a trophy, perhaps the FA Cup, which they last won in 1956/57.

It will also be important for important players Boubacar Kamara, Lucas Digne and Diego Carlos to recover. But Emery will have somewhere to take even if they are unfit. It will also be interesting to see what role he finds for Philippe Coutinho.

However, Aston Villa also have to pay Villarreal the €6 million that Emery has written into his contract for this move.

The Spanish outfit should then be taken over by Quique Setién, who last managed Barcelona, from which he left in August 2020, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
