Bayern Munich without the title? Almost inconceivable, but after 11 long years it may be so. The unexpected and still misunderstood change of coach seems to have done more harm than good.
Even under Julian Nagelsmann everything wasn’t perfect, but Bayern were in contention for the treble. After his sacking, the atmosphere in the cabin seemed to have been disturbed, and the players were surprised as well. And after the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, the Bavarian giant started to lose points even more.
Borussia Dortmund had countless chances to take advantage of their rivals’ hesitation, but they failed to do so for a long time. It wasn’t until the weekend that they finally regained the lead at the most opportune time. Before the last round of the competition.
Bayern will play an away game in Cologne. It’s not going to be easy from a footballing point of view. It will also face an unpleasant atmosphere. The Dortmund and Cologne fans are friendly camps and so every possible Borussia goal will be celebrated in Cologne.
The players of the Munich side will therefore be very aware of what the score is in the rivals’ match. Dortmund must win, they host Mainz at home. Alternatively, they must hope for a Bayern loss.
Preparations for the celebrations in full swing
While Munich are rather praying, Dortmund are already preparing for the celebrations. After all, the real Bundesliga winner’s trophy will be heading to the Westphalian city, while a mere replica will be heading to Bavaria.
So if Borussia wins against Mainz on Saturday to claim their ninth league title, Dortmund will be in for a wild Sunday. At exactly 12:09, the motorcade will set off for a four-hour drive. And it doesn’t stop there.
The players will have a ceremony to sign the Golden Book at the city hall, after which the four-kilometre march around Borsigplatz will begin. At least 200,000 fans are expected to attend.
“We are strong, we are looking forward to this challenge and we have been preparing conscientiously. Let’s behave peacefully. We all have the chance to show Dortmund as a positive place now,” Dortmund police chief Gregor Lange told Sky Germany.
When Dortmund last celebrated the title in 2012, over 400,000 fans attended the championship party. Will that number be surpassed?
