Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach played in the 23rd round of the German Bundesliga. However, the match between the second team and the thirteenth team did not offer much drama. The home team Dortmund blasted their rival with six goals, two of which were scored by the team captain Marco Reus. He added three assists to his fine performance. In injury time, he turned down the chance to complete his hat-trick from a penalty, which he gave to Emre Can.
Borussia Mönchengladbach are not having a good season. Adi Hutter’s men are only thirteenth in the German top flight table, and the traditional European Cup contender was knocked out of the German Cup in the eighth round. But the first half at Signal Iduna Park suggested that Gladbach could play an even game with Dortmund.
Dortmund’s goalkeeper had his hands full in the first half. Kouadio Kone got a shot inside the penalty area in the 23rd minute, but the Swiss goalkeeper parried his attempt to the right post for a corner kick, saving his team from conceding a goal.
At the other end, three minutes later, German striker Marco Reus got on the end of a Donyell Malen shot and beat visiting goalkeeper Sommer. Six minutes later, Reus sent a clever through ball to Malen, who made an independent break against Sommer to make it 2-0 to the Black and Yellows.
Dortmund went into the dressing room at half-time with a two-goal lead.
In the second half, Gladbach scored their first big chance. In the 63rd minute, Jonas Hofmann got on the end of the ball, but unfortunately for the visitors he only hit the post.
Home coach Marco Rose reacted to the action on the pitch by making three substitutions. In the 67th and 68th minutes he took the trio of Guerreiro, Thorgan Hazard and Malen out of the game. Instead, he sent on Nico Schulz, Marius Wolf and Youssoufa Moukok.
Rose showed great foresight in making the substitution, as substitute Wolf fired in two minutes after coming on and sent the ball into the net from the crossbar past a helpless Sommer. Reus was again sent in to take the chance and he crossed for his second goal of the game.
The Westphalian captain showed his good overview of the game a few minutes later when he found the substitute Moukok just in front of the goal and from close range he made it 4:0.
Reus then made his mark again when he took a pass from Mats Hummels just outside the penalty area and finished perfectly into the bottom left corner of Sommer’s net to put the game into the debacle category.
The bad luck continued to stick with Gladbach when Wolf was fouled in the penalty area, and Emre Can capitalised on the opportunity offered in the form of a penalty. The match ended with a tennis score of 6: 0.
Borussia Dortmund’s next game is on Thursday, when they take on Scottish side Rangers in the return leg of the Europa League knockout stage. Mönchengladbach will host Wolfsburg on Saturday.
