Another big blow for Valencia fans. After dropping out of the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, the Bats are facing another mediocre season and a fight for salvation. Fans protested outside the Estádio Mestalla after the game against the management.
Spanish champion in 2002 and 2004, winner of the Copa del Rey in 1999, 2008 and the Spanish Super Cup in 1999. In addition, the winner of the 2004 UEFA Europa League (UEFA Cup) as well as the 2004 UEFA Super Cup. Valencia at the turn of the 21st century was one of Spain’s absolute top teams.
But with the arrival of owner Peter Lim came a big downward slide. Back in the 2014/15 season, Valencia finished fourth and secured the Champions League, only for Lim to incomprehensibly start selling off the entire team in 2015-2017. Suddenly, the Bats were drowning in relegation battles.
Last season, popular coach José Bordalás took the club to the Copa del Rey final, but in June he was sacked over the phone and new coach Gennaro Gattuso arrived.
But Valencia is having another bad season. They are in 12th place in La Liga and are just 3 points off the relegation places. On top of that, they crashed out in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals against Athletic on Thursday, which was the last chance to salvage a bad season.
So, at the end of January, the team is only left to fight to avoid the last three places. Not a pretty prospect.
So the fans loudly booed the players, the bench, and especially the management after the game. After the game, instead of going home, many fans gathered on Avenida de Suecia to protest the current situation.
The crowd shouted “No vais a salir “, “Peter vete ya” , “You’re not going out” and “Peter (the club owner) leave already”.
