Don’t ask me about my family! Betis’ Canales sees very bizarre red card
You probably won’t find more bizarre situations in football. Sergio Canales has played 460 career games without a single red card and when the first one finally came, it was for a very strange reason.
You probably won’t find more bizarre situations in football. Sergio Canales has played 460 career games without a single red card and when the first one finally came, it was for a very strange reason.
The match between Cadiz and Real Betis didn’t offer much excitement, the duel between the two Andalusian sides ended in a goalless draw. It was not until the 98th minute, when the visiting star midfielder Sergio Canales came off the field, that the most liveliness ensued.
The main referee Mateu Lahoz awarded the Real Madrid player two yellow cards in a matter of seconds and therefore a red card. But the reason is very bizarre.
One of the most famous and best referees in Spain, Lahoz set up 7 minutes, but not much happened from the setup. So Canales, according to the minutes, begged the referee to set an extra minute.
However, Lahoz didn’t want to hear the discussion and after constant urging from Canales, but polite without swearing, he awarded him a yellow card. However, the Betis midfielder pressed on and asked for an extension to the set-up. And that’s when a bizarre situation occurred. According to the transcript of El Larguero, the following conversation took place.
Lahoz:: Stop discussing or I’ll expel you.
Canales:: If I can’t talk, then don’t ask me about my family.
A second yellow followed and thus a red, so Canales headed for the showers. And why the family answer? Because Lahoz is known for often communicating with players before the game, asking them how they are doing, how their family is and other questions. It is the family question that he is famous for among the players.
That’s why Canales didn’t allow himself to make a similar dig, which Lahoz didn’t resist and sent Canales off. But it’s certainly not grounds for a yellow card, it’s not offensive language or protesting the referee’s decision.
So Betis decided to find footage documenting the situation and send it to the Referees’ Commission to appeal the red card. After all, the fifth team in the table is facing Atlético Madrid for fourth place this weekend and losing their star player to this red card would be a big loss.
