Atlético Madrid is the reigning La Liga champion, but that is not enough for the team from the capital. It wants to compete with Real Madrid and Barcelona on a regular basis, so successful coach Diego Simeone is preparing a new reinforcement. His son, Giuliano Simeone.
Diego Simeone has been Atlético’s coach since 2011. In that time, he has twice blown away the two giants with the league title, the red part of Madrid celebrated in 2014 and 2021. In 2012 and 2017, he dominated the Europa League and had a chance to win Europe’s most prestigious trophy.
In 2014 and 2016 Simeone took the Colchoneros to the Champions League final, but on both occasions they succumbed to city rivals Real Madrid. Either way, his tireless energy, passion and commitment to the game have helped pull Atlético up to the level of the two biggest clubs in Spain.
And for Atleti to continue to chase Real Madrid with Barcelona, that passion needs to be redoubled. That’s why El Cholo is trying to bring his son, 18-year-old Giuliano Simeone, into the squad.
In fact, the 51-year-old coach has several stars at his disposal in preparation, including attacking aces Luis Suárez and Joao Félix. That’s also why the young Giuliano is getting a chance in attack. The coach’s son has been given a chance in four preliminary matches so far, each time starting in the starting line-up.
He played 70 minutes against Numancia and had a big part in the first goal scored by the Rojiblancos. Against Salzburg he managed 68 minutes, with Wolfsburg he lasted 69 minutes and against Cadiz he played the full 90 minutes. According to the Spanish media, he is a big surprise and a breath of fresh air for the reigning La Liga champions.
Although he hasn’t scored a goal yet, he fights until the last minute on the pitch and fights for every ball, just like his father. The desire to win and the endless passion just runs in Simeon’s family.
The Argentine youngster is definitely not in Atlético’s squad out of nepotism, he is one of the truly great talents. Whether he will follow in his father’s footsteps and make it big in a Colchoneros jersey remains to be seen.
