Despite beating Freiburg, Bayern may end up without a point
In the Bundesliga table, Bayern Munich leads second-placed Borussia Dortmund by nine points after the 28th round, but the lead may be narrowed before the next round is played. The situation at the end of the match, when the Munich players played one more player after a chaotic substitution, may be to blame.
After a goalless half-time at the Europa-Park stadium in Freiburg, Bayern Munich certainly had no idea that they might not even bring a point back to Bavaria after scoring four goals in the second half. A comical situation occurred with just five minutes left in the game and the Bavarians already leading by two goals.
The Bavarian players played for a few seconds with twelve players in the field
Nikolas Sule replaced the substitute Corentin Tolisso, who had to go to the cabins due to illness. At the same moment Marcel Sabitzer, who was supposed to replace Kingsley Coman, came on. The winger was replaced but did not leave the field.
After the Bavarian big club had played for a few seconds with twelve players, Freiburg defender Nico Schlotterbeck pointed out to the referee the discrepancy in the number of players. “Niki Sule came in and I noticed that nobody left,” Schlotterbeck told Goal.com after the game. “Then the game restarted, first I counted the players and then I informed the referee,” he pointed out that nobody would have noticed the strange situation.
According to Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann, a mix-up with the electronic substitution boards was to blame. As soon as the mistake was discovered, the visiting team decided to correct it. Instead of the number 11 worn by Bayern’s Coman, the light board showed 29, which no player on the field had.
“It was a confusing situation, Tolisso had stomach problems and ran into the dressing room,” Nagelsman told reporters. “Coman didn’t know he had to leave, too, and stayed on the field for eight or nine seconds, but nothing changed the game,” he added.
Will Freiburg protest?
Although it was only a short period of time, Freiburg remained somewhat frustrated by the situation. “It was an extremely bizarre scene that I have never experienced before,” sports director Jochen Saier assessed the curious situation. “We have to calm down and think about it now,” he said when asked if Freiburg would lodge a protest.
Bayern thus face an uncomfortable situation as there is a possibility of losing for the third time in the last four Bundesliga games. It is giving a chance, perhaps through no fault of its own, to a tightening rival from Dortmund. However, the latter failed in their home game against Leipzig and were beaten 1: 4.
