When Cristiano Ronaldo left Manchester United for Saudi Arabia in the winter, it triggered a huge uproar. Many people saw the move as the end of a career and a hefty pay cheque for ‘retirement’.
But Ronaldo didn’t just go to finish his career. He knew he still had several records to break and a slightly easier Saudi Arabian league could help him do it.
Al-Nassr took on Tunisia’s Monastir in the Arab Club Champions Cup. Talisca opened the scoring for the Saudi Arabian side in the first half, with Monastir equalising in the 66th minute after an own goal from Al Oujami.
Eight minutes later, however, the star of the match had already made his mark. Al Ghannam sent a precise cross into the box, Ronaldo pounced on it and headed it into the net.
He scored two more. He has now scored in 22 consecutive seasons, surpassing even the legendary Gerd Muller. He scored 144 goals with his head, while Ronaldo scored 145 with his head.
In third place we find Real Madrid legend Carlos Santillana, who scored 125 goals by head, and in fourth place is Brazilian god Pelé, who scored 124 goals.
But Ronaldo has more records to go. He will certainly want to retain the number one spot in total goals in history. He has 838 goals to his name, with Messi close on his heels with 810 goals. In addition, the 23-year-old Erling Haaland has already scored 183 goals, and it will be interesting to see if he comes close to the two football icons.
