Every football player or fan has had a moment when they were really angry with a referee. But what William Ribeiro did in the Brazilian Sixth Division is beyond the pale.
Guarani-VA and Sau Paulo RS played each other in the Brazilian Sixth League. But the match lasted only 30 minutes before Ribeiro of Sao Paulo was completely outclassed.
Guarani-VA were leading 1-0 when the referee blew for a foul on Ribeiro. But the Brazilian footballer couldn’t take it, punched the referee and was kicked by the Brazilian footballer while he was on the ground.
An ambulance had to arrive on the pitch and took the unconscious referee to the hospital in Venancio Aires. At 11 pm, news came out that the referee had woken up again. However, he remains under the care of doctors.
William Ribeiro was subsequently arrested by the police and taken into custody. According to Terra de Venancio Aires radio, he was charged with attempted murder. The Twitter account Gaucho Informa shared a photo of Ribeiro being led away in handcuffs by police.
“The match is suspended. No competition is worth a human life,” the Sao Paulo RS club wrote on its Twitter account. Both teams expressed their strong support for the referee, who is recovering in hospital.
Club president Delvid Goulart Pereira has already announced that Ribeiro’s contract has been terminated with immediate effect.
“We are very sorry and deeply ashamed. We send all the apologies in the world to the referee and his family, as well as to all the people who had to see these scenes,” the Sao Paulo RS president wrote in a statement, among other things.
