Wrexham AFC, founded back in 1864, are having a breathtaking year. And for local fans, it’s a long-awaited respite and moment of joy after many harrowing years.
Indeed, the last major achievement was in 1977/78, triumphing in Ligue One.
In 2020, however, American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney became majority owners and Wrexham slowly headed higher.
The players were in peak form in this year’s National League, where they completed the season with a championship.
The finish was dramatic right to the very end. The second team in the table, Notts County, were the long term chasers who also made the 100 point mark. The key match was a mutual duel in which Wrexham managed to win 3-2.
Then a win against Boreham Wood was the icing on the cake for the dream promotion and the euphoria could break out. The moments were so strong that even the American duo of owners could not keep the tears at bay at the moment of promotion.
The celebrations began on the day of the game and there may not be any peace for a long time. The tiny Welsh town was swept up in football celebrations, after all, see the footage for yourself.

But for the team’s management, promotion to the fourth highest league in the isles is reportedly not the ultimate goal. The dream is to get Wrexham into the famous and prestigious Premier League.
But the road will be long, thorny and quite possibly unrealistic. Either way, the locals will believe that’s what dreams are for, to come true.
