That watching the minor leagues is a boring affair? In the case of ours, it certainly is. But the English ones provide a great spectacle with an even better atmosphere.
That watching the minor leagues is a boring affair? In the case of ours, it certainly is. But the English ones provide a great spectacle with an even better atmosphere.
If you’re one of those who follow the lower competitions, you couldn’t have missed Monday’s game in the fifth English league, when the top two teams in the table faced off.
Wrexham, which is a world sensation thanks to its owner, welcomed Notts County on its field. Both teams clearly dominate their league and it has been clear for some time that these two clubs will fight it out for direct promotion.
Both went into the game with a hundred points. Both had scored over a hundred goals and both had a twenty-four point lead over third placed Woking.
The only way to celebrate direct promotion from League Five is to finish second in the table. Second already goes into the relegation playoff.
In the game, the visitors went ahead first when they took the lead in the fourth minute of injury time. It didn’t take long after the start of the second half for the home side to equalise. Twenty minutes later they even went into the lead and jumped to the top of the table at that point.
Notts County were not going to accept this state of affairs and five minutes later they equalised as well. The crowd in the stadium were certainly not bored and a few minutes later saw a fifth goal which restored Wrexham’s lead.
At the very end of the game, the visiting players got a golden chance to equalise when a penalty was whistled in their favour.
An absolutely brilliant display was capped off by home goalkeeper Ben Foster who converted the penalty to the huge delight of his fans.
Wrexham jumped back into first position with one game to spare. If they manage to finish the game, they will lead the league by six points with three rounds to go.
