PSV Eindhoven drew 1-1 with Dortmund in the opening leg of the Champions League eight-final. After several chances, the home side scored from the penalty spot, with Luuk de Jong scoring. However, Mats Hummels as the fouling player disagrees with the referee’s verdict.
From the point of view of an unbiased spectator, it was very attractive football. The PSV vs Dortmund match was a good match from the opening minutes, with several good-looking chances for both the home side and the visitors.
The first goal of the match came in the 24th minute, with former PSV player Donyell Malen scoring the goal. He sent Borussia into the lead. The German side held on until the end of the first half.
In the second half, however, Dortmund goalkeeper Alexander Meyer cashed in. And it was only after a penalty kick from Luuk de Jong.
Malik Tillman, who was penetrating the opposition’s penalty area, was fouled by stopper Mats Hummels. The Borussia stopper was the first to play the ball, but due to the high intensity of his slide, he caught up with Tillman and took it through his legs as well.
The referee ruled the whole situation a foul under the current rules and therefore pointed to the penalty spot. He also consulted the video referee about Hummels’ foul, but he confirmed the correctness of the verdict.
De Jong then set up the ball for the penalty kick and beat the Dortmund goalkeeper with a precise cross to the left post. It’s level, 1-1. And with that result, the first leg of the Champions League eight-final is over.
PSV draw with Borussia, Hummels disagrees with penalty
Borussia’s stopper Hummels was vocal about the incident on the pitch, and he didn’t let the thread dry even after the match was over.
In fact, he wrote via his social network X account that he couldn’t believe that such interventions are actually being whistled today. Hummels was simply furious.
“Twitter is waiting for this. Twitter gets it. What a joke that a penalty was called against us. Again! I can’t believe that interventions like today or against Chelsea or PSG are whistled. Especially when we have VAR,” Hummels said on the networks.
Either way, it is certain that the result of the opening match of the Champions League eight-final will not change. Dortmund, however, are in a slightly more advantageous position. They will play their next game at home, at Signal Iduna Park.
