Conor McGregor has released a message on his social media that he is going back in the cage! And straight into the UFC 300 anniversary event. While fans have already received clouds of such news from the star Irishman, the information was confirmed by his opponent.
Is he toying with the world of mixed martial arts again or is it finally here? That’s the question every MMA fan will be asking, at least until the information is confirmed by the head of the organization himself, Dana White.
The last time we saw him in a fight was in July 2021, when Conor McGregor capped off his trilogy with Dustin Poirier in a rather unfortunate fashion. In that fight, he broke his tibia and had to undergo serious surgery. Many were not even hopeful of his return, although the fighter himself has more than once made statements about his return.
But most of his promises remained unfulfilled. Thus, the media was more dominated by reports about his entry into the film world or about his frequent controversies. A spark of hope was ignited by his participation in The Ultimate Fighter series, in which he acted together with Michael Chandler as coaches.
As is tradition, at the end of filming, the two coaches face off against each other in a fight. But there was no sign of him returning to the cage. Despite announcing late last year that he would be back fighting in mid-2024, UFC boss Dana White denied the news of his announced return in June.
Conor McGregor will reportedly return at the UFC 300 anniversary gala
Fans were thus slowly losing hope. But “The Notorious” dropped the huge bombshell on his Twitter account earlier today that everyone was waiting for. “Deal sealed, McGregor at 300,” was his statement. Many might argue that the Irish fighter has issued several such messages and none have come to fruition.
However, several indications suggest that this time it could work. “I accept, I’ll see you soon, ” Michael Chandler replied after a while, marking not only the star Irishman but also the historic UFC 300 gala.
The speculation was then confirmed yesterday by Dana White himself, who confirmed on his Instagram that the main event at the said gala will be announced soon. “You won’t get the main event,” White said.”Believe me, the UFC 300 main event is going to be insane.”
We’ve learned from history that when it comes to information released by McGregor himself, we have to take everything with a grain of salt. But the prospect of the greatest comeback in the history of the sport has never been closer.
