Conor Gallagher is undoubtedly one of the biggest surprises of the current English Premier League season. The twenty-one-year-old midfielder is on loan at Selhurst Park from Chelsea in London. Already it is almost certain that he is developing into a player of the highest quality.
When the name Crystal Palace is mentioned, the first thing most fans think of is Wilfried Zaha. It was the twenty-nine year old Ivory Coast international who was for a long time the biggest driving force of his team.
However, this is not the case in the current season. French coach Patrick Viera can rely mainly on midfielder Conor Gallagher. He has played fifteen league games so far, scoring six goals and adding three assists.
In total, he has contributed to nine goals, which is 41% of the team’s shots. Thanks to his great performances, Gallagher also earned his first call-up to the England national team. He made his debut in an Albion jersey on 15 November in a crushing 10-0 win against San Marino.
The most productive U21 player in the Premier League is now fulfilling his potential, something he didn’t quite manage to do in the previous season. Gallagher experienced relegation with West Bromwich Albion, overcoming the opposition’s defence on only two occasions.
“I am not surprised that the national coach loves him, because I loved him from day one too. Humble, kind, with a smile on his face and always ready to give his all, willing to learn and improve,” revealed coach Thomas Tuchel on his address.
Although Chelsea are currently struggling in the midfield, Gallagher is unlikely to return to Stamford Bridge until the summer. He can be expected to take his chance in the A-team like Mason Mount, Reece James or Trevoh Chalobah.
