Chelsea won at Everton to start the new season, with the only goal coming from Italian Jorginho. Although the home side were better in certain passages, they couldn’t get any real pressure at the end.
Everton entered the game very actively, but the first threat was the visitors. Their standard situation, however, ended only with a header into the middle of the goal. Then the home side made a nonsensical little home run of their own.
Mason Mount’s raid on Jordan Pickford was eventually snuffed out by Ben Godfrey, but only at the cost of a corner kick and an injury. Play was stopped for seven minutes and the talented stopper had to be carried off on a stretcher.
At the other end James Tarkowski headed dangerously, Edouard Mendy had to head out for a corner. Outside of that situation, however, Chelsea were clearly dominating, with the Blue defence turning everything away for corners.
Once Chelsea got going in the 42nd minute, Raheem Sterling’s goal was disallowed for offside. The Toffees eventually didn’t let up the pressure and cashed in in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
Ben Chilwell was fouled in the whitewash, and Jorginho then converted the penalty in a sovereign manner.
Early in the second half, the home side’s Demarai Gray took a dangerous shot, but the defender knocked the ball away for a corner. Everton had a good first ten minutes overall, but after Chelsea steadied it, the pace of the game went down considerably.
It wasn’t until the 82nd minute that Sterling had a chance to break the game open for good, but his point-blank chance was thwarted by Vitaliy Mykolenko with a slip. Everton didn’t get any pressure at the end and lost 0:1.
