Chelsea owner doesn’t understand football? Boehly faces criticism from Mainz sporting director, says he will regret it
Chelsea have a new owner and he wanted to prove himself in the transfer window, which he did. The Blues spent the most money of any club in the world. However, the start to the season hasn’t been the most successful. It hasn’t been disastrous either, yet coach Thomas Tuchel has been sacked. The move has been the target of criticism, including from the German coach’s former employer.
99 matches, 3 trophies and 3 unsuccessful final duels. However, the three trophies won include the Champions League winners’ trophy, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup. Twice Chelsea under the German coach failed in the FA Cup final, once in the Carabao Cup final.
Otherwise, however, Thomas Tuchel did an excellent job at the London club. He has instilled an obvious handwriting to the team and given space and time, it would be interesting to see what he can do with the new signings that arrived in the summer. It just won’t happen.
Six rounds of the Premier League, after which Chelsea are sixth with only 5 points behind first-placed Arsenal, and one bad game in the Champions League, namely a 0-1 loss to Dinamo Zagreb, surprisingly broke his neck.
Yet, just a few weeks before his sacking, Chelsea’s new owner Todd Boehly claimed that Tuchel would be the one to build the whole project at Stamford Bridge. He was going to be a key figure. But in the end, everything is different.
Boehly immediately came under fire from critics. Not only from fans, but also from experts and people who are involved in professional football. One of the critics was Christian Hendel, the sporting director of the Bundesliga club Mainz.
“It was purely the decision of the club owner. Someone who has no idea about football probably thought that sixth place was not enough, so he thought he would try another coach. After only six games. I can’t think of any other reason. Chelsea will bitterly regret it, they won’t get a coach that good,” Hendel told Bild.
According to Hendel, the sacking of Tuchel is water in the mill for people who protest against modern football, in which investors often have the main say without understanding football.
It is worth noting then that Hendel was the German coach’s superior in Mainz. He was sporting director there from 1992 to 2016. After that, he made a short hop to Schalke, where he spent three years, to return to his post at Mainz again in 2020.
