Chelsea has to pay too! UEFA punishes London club for management irregularities during Russian Abramovich’s reign
UEFA on Friday evening officially confirmed the punishment for Juventus Torino, who have been banned from the upcoming edition of the Europa Conference League and must pay a fine of 10 million euros. Chelsea were also fined the same amount, with UEFA punishing the London club for an earlier breach of financial fair play.
Football’s governing body UEFA, in addition to officially confirming the punishment for Juventus Turin on Friday, also fined Chelsea ten million euros.
This is due to irregularities in the club’s management between 2012 and 2019, when the Russian Roman Abramovich was the club’s owner.
According to The Athletic, these problems were brought to the attention of the club’s new management, headed by Todd Boehly.
However, unlike Juventus, Chelsea will not face further sanctions from UEFA. The West London club will not participate in any of the European Cups in the upcoming season.
In the English top flight, Chelsea finished twelfth in the competition. It lost 17 points to the seventh place, which ensures participation in at least the European Conference League.
Chelsea has reportedly submitted these incomplete financial statements to the Premier League, but the Premier League has not yet confirmed that it has investigated the club.
UEFA statement
“Following the sale of the club in May 2022, the new owner identified and proactively reported to UEFA instances of potentially incomplete financial statements under the club’s previous ownership. The matters reported related to transactions that took place between 2012 and 2019,” said a UEFA statement, also quoted by The Athletic.
“Following its assessment, including the relevant limitation period, the First Chamber of the CFCB concluded a settlement agreement with the club, which agreed to pay a financial penalty of €10 million,” UEFA added.
