The London club is already slowly looking at possible reinforcements it could bring in the January transfer window. The main acquisition is expected to be a young Hungarian defender, who is currently at Fenerbahce in Turkey. When could he move to Chelsea?

The defending champions of the league’s most famous trophy are looking for reinforcements in their defensive ranks, according to the latest information. Twenty-three-year-old Attila Szalai could be the new signing.

According to Football Insider, the English side have already held talks with the Fenerbahce Istanbul defender’s agents and everything should be working towards a successful conclusion. A source close to the club reportedly revealed to Football Insider that Szalai is set to be the main transfer acquisition for the London giant.

The transfer could reportedly happen as early as the January transfer window. And Chelsea are ready to act on that basis. In any case, Szalai is still under contract at the Turkish club until 2025.

The coach of the London club was particularly impressed by Szalai on the international stage, when he played for Hungary against England in the qualifiers for the looming World Cup. Thomas Tuchel would see the Hungarian defender as a sufficient replacement for the possible departure of Antonio Rüdiger, Thiago Silva or Andreas Christensen.

He has played 23 games for Hungary so far this season and has also featured in four Europa League games.

As far as the current season is concerned, Szalai has played twelve games for Fenerbahce in the Turkish top flight and is the cornerstone of the defensive line. Moreover, Tuchel also practices a three-defender formation, not four. This is another factor that may move Szalai a little closer to winning a new contract.

And it seems that this tactic is working well for the Blues, as they have only conceded four goals in twelve games! Chelsea also top the Premier League table with 29 points, with a three-point lead over second-placed Manchester City.
