Edinson Cavani will end his two-year stay at Manchester United and can choose a new contract as a free agent. He should find it in Spain, playing in the fourth of the Top 5 European leagues.
He started his European career in Palermo, Italy, from where he moved to Naples, where he scored a staggering 78 goals in 3 league seasons. So in 2013 he moved to PSG where he spent 7 years and became an idol.
But then came the Neymar and Mbappé era and the Uruguayan goalscorer was sidelined. So he headed to Manchester United ahead of the 2020/21 season. He helped the Red Devils a lot last season, scoring 10 goals and assisting 3 goals in the league, adding another goal in the cup and a 6+2 record in the Europa League.
This season he hasn’t made as much of an impact, also due to the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo. In the Premier League, he only appeared in 15 games and scored 2 goals. He will leave Old Trafford as a free agent at the end of June.
And where will he go next? Apparently to Spain. He hasn’t played on the Iberian Peninsula yet and some teams would like to use the striker’s qualities and experience.
According to Josep Pedrerola of El Chiringuito, Cavani’s agents have already spoken to representatives of Atlético Madrid, Sevilla and Villarreal. Diego Plaza Casals adds that Cavani himself wants to play in Spain, a country that is very close to his culture and language.
The Colchoneros have parted ways with another Uruguayan striker, Luis Suárez, so the arrival of another experienced marksman would certainly be welcomed by Simeone.
Sevilla, on the other hand, have been trying to rub it in among the top three, but have often suffered from inexperience in finishing and not converting chances, scoring the second fewest goals (53) out of the Top 7 in La Liga. Therefore, the arrival of a striker who has netted 360 goals in his career at club level would certainly not be disdained by Julen Lopetegui.
