Can Klopp withstand Liverpool’s crisis? German coach admits concern after Wolves debacle but still believes in turnaround
Liverpool have been one of the stalwarts of the Premier League in recent seasons, but this season is different. In the league, we would find Jürgen Klopp’s charges only in 10th position, the team is not doing well at all. Is the German coach in danger?
Liverpool have been one of the stalwarts of the Premier League in recent seasons, but this season is different. In the league, we would find Jürgen Klopp’s charges only in 10th position, the team is not doing well at all. Is the German coach in danger?
Liverpool have not experienced such a crisis for a long time. The traditional English side fell to Wolves (0: 3) on Saturday and lost their third away game in a row in the league, conceding three goals for the third time and losing 0: 3 on aggregate for the second time.
The Reds have won only one of their last seven games. And that was in the FA Cup against Wolverhampton, who made amends in the league on Saturday. Liverpool, on the other hand, have lost four times.
Things are not looking good with the team at all. They are 10th in the league and 11 points behind the places guaranteeing the Champions League. Moreover, in the next round it faces a Merseyside derby against Everton, who are buoyed by their win over Arsenal.
However, much is being made of the future of coach Jürgen Klopp. Wolves fans have been singing his praises as their team ride out the news that he will be sacked on Sunday morning. While that’s not very realistic, something has to change.
Klopp has long complained about Liverpool’s lack of financial strength, often appearing genuinely irritable. It’s no different now that his charges are failing. But the German himself believes the situation can be improved.
“I definitely believe we can turn it around. There have already been enough excuses for our performance. How could I not be worried? I can’t sit here and say that everything is fine and that we did well. It’s not,” Goal quoted him as saying.
Among other things, the Liverpool manager claims last season is to blame: “We played 63 games. Obviously, it affected the first part of the season. But how long are we going to get over it? It’s February now, we’ve had a full week to prepare, we’ve got another eight or nine days. We are fit, even though we have some injuries.”
It’s worth noting that Liverpool have already conceded more goals this season than they did all of last season. Moreover, it has lost more away games than in the last two seasons combined.
